History

The Department of Commerce is one of the pioneering departments of Durgapur Government College which came into existence in the year 1982-83. This department offers Bachelors of Commerce (Honours in Accountancy) and Bachelor of Commerce (Program in Accountancy) under Kazi Nazrul University. Currently, The Department takes pride in its commendable performance vis-à-vis major developmental indicators such as student intake, number of teachers, student’s success rate etc. Almost from the very beginning, the Department has been utilizing the services of a number of part time faculty members taken from both academic institutions and industrial organizations of repute. At present, it has five whole time teachers and six part time faculty members. Most of the distinguished faculty members are also members of various professional institutions. This is the largest department of the college in respect of student strength. The Department ensures the rigour of academic program and the faculty strive ceaselessly, to mesh imagination and learning with creativity and innovation. The Commerce Department creates a stimulating environment for the academic growth of its students. The faculty members are known for their expertise in accounting, finance and management, and impart practical knowledge on the subjects.

The teaching methods adopted by the faculty for enhancing the skills of the students are Chalk and Board, Power Point Presentation, Audio-Visual aids (films and videos on subject related topics), Case Study Method, Group Discussion Method, Co-operative Learning. The Department of Commerce arranges for personal counselling of students. In order to enhance the academic enrichment, faculty members adopted personal counselling of the students. The students are advised to keep themselves fit both physically and mentally through physical exercise with the help of physical education department & NSS Unit of the college.The teachers of this department always encourage the students to take part in NSS, NCC, and encourage them to attend different seminars and to illuminate innovative ideas through college exhibitions. The department follows continuous assessment of the students through class test. The result/success rate of commerce department is very good. The Department intends to prepare the students to gain productive employment in business houses after graduation while leaving the option for higher education open as far as practicable. This Department aims to provide knowledge and skills in almost all areas of business to equip students to take up entry level jobs in different sectors of commerce, trade and industry.

Students of this department take part in Annual College Exhibitions in different Commerce and Finance related topics.

Courses

The department offers following two undergraduate programmes in Commerce under the affiliation of Kazi Nazrul University, Asansol

• B.Com. Honours in Accountancy

• B.Com. Program in Accountancy

The curriculum and syllabus of these courses is under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) implemented by the affiliating university.

The department offers generic elective course in Commerce for the students of Commerce Honours programme.

Infrastructure
  • The Department has a separate staff room equipped with computer facilities. Computer Classes of the department are held in the central computer laboratory. Teachers of the department have donated books from their personal library and established a book bank for the benefit of the students.
