WINTER SCHOOL TRAINING COURSES UNDER DBT STAR COLLEGE SCHEME

  • Winter School Training Course involving student project on “Bioactivity of organic compounds by computational studies” (24-11-2022 to 30-11-2022)

Use of Computers is inevitable in almost each and every field of education, especially for the science and technology. Computational studies have gradually emerged as an important branch to understand the fruitful interplay between the theory and experiments in research and industry. It was mentioned in the proposal of Departments of Chemistry, Botany and Zoology under the DBT STAR COLLEGE SCHEME to enable students use different software, online sites and analyze data, which will be required for their higher studies and will also make them industry ready. Computational Chemistry and Computational Biology are not included in the University Curriculum and hence we designed this Winter School to bridge the curricular gap.

Outcome: Undergraduate students used chem draw software to draw the structures of biologically active compounds selected by them, they prepared the mol files and fed them into the Pass online software site to obtain the biologically relevant properties of the compounds. This workshop has equipped students towards the basics of computational chemistry and computational biology studies. They then analyzed the biological activity of the selected compound and presented their prepared projects through power-point presentations.

  • Winter School Training Course involving student project on “Application of Remote Sensing & GIS in Land Use-Land Cover Mapping” (17-01-2023 to 24-01-2023)

Remote sensing provides synoptic view and multi-temporal data for land use and land cover mapping. Land cover includes natural features like, water, snow, grassland, forest, Soil and land use includes agricultural land, built up land, canal, and other manmade features. It was mentioned in the proposal of Department of Geology under the DBT STAR COLLEGE SCHEME. The workshop is intended to enable students use Q-GIS software, and analyze image data, which will be required for their higher studies and will also make them industry ready.  Preparation of LC-LU mapping using image data is not included in the University Curriculum and hence we designed this winter school to bridge the curricular gap.

Outcome: Undergraduate students learnt to use Q-GIS software for mapping of land use and land cover using remote sensing and geographical information systems (GIS). They will be able to recognize different earth features from satellite images which enabled them to apply their knowledge in their specialized field.

• Winter School Training Course involving student project on “Characterization of Chemicals and analysis of the material safety data sheet before performing experiments” (24-11-2022 to 30-11-2022)

Characterization of Chemicals on the basis of their hazardous effects on the health and environment is an important area of concern, which is often overlooked in the course curriculum of undergraduate studies. However, the knowledge of such characterization is essential before performing experiments. It was mentioned in the proposal of Department of Chemistry under the DBT STAR COLLEGE SCHEME. This Winter School was intended to fill the curricular gap so that students will be able to determine the hazardous effects of chemicals and the safety measures to be adopted before performing experiments in the laboratories by accessing the material safety data sheet.

Outcome: Students could characterize chemical compounds by classifying them on the basis of safety symbols. They were able to analyze chemicals before performing experiments and the safety measures to be adopted while using chemicals in the laboratories.

• Winter School Training Course involving student project on “Learning Chemistry through Software Applications” (09-11-2022 to 16-11-2022)

Learning chemistry through software applications has gradually emerged as an important branch to understand the fruitful interplay between the theory and experiments in research and industry. It was mentioned in the proposal of Department of Chemistry under the DBT STAR COLLEGE SCHEME. It is intended to enable students use different software, online sites and analyze data, which will be required for their higher studies and to make them industry ready in the field of Computational Chemistry. The software applications used for this course are in collaboration with University of Morocco.

Outcome: Students used software applications to draw chemical structures, to determine stereochemistry, to determine IUPAC nomenclature, to optimize structures using Gauss View and Gaussian programmes and calculate the optimized energies and HOMO-LUMO energies

• Winter School Training Course involving student project on “C-Programming and Applications” (10-03-2023 to 17-03-2023)

In the modern age of computers, every field of science and technology rely heavily on ‘Computer Programming’. In addition to this, most of the equipment (electronic/ electrical) used in our daily lives are designed using computer programming. For example, in the monitoring of launch of an artificial satellite in its projected path, in the working mechanism of a washing machine, in the repeated calculation of complex mathematical functions, computer programming is an integral part. So, the knowledge of computer programming becomes necessary. Though there are different programming languages, C language has certain advantage over other programming languages. So, under the DBT STAR COLLEGE SCHEME, Department of Mathematics, Durgapur Government College took the initiative to enable students to learn the basics of Computer Programming using C for their higher studies, and also to make them ready for software companies.

Outcome: Undergraduate students were able to design programs used in calculator, for object oriented programming, to print mark sheet of students in a class and to obtain values of complex mathematical functions

  • Winter School Training Course involving student project on “MS-Excel and its Applications” (17-03-2023 to 22-03-2023)

Everyone uses Microsoft Excel in day-to-day academic and professional activities. This training was intended to provide a platform for the participants to learn data handling and its analysis in a much easier way to avoid time-consuming hard work. The participants will be able to efficiently apply Excel for various academic and professional activities.

Outcome: After completion of this winter school, Students used Microsoft excel for data representation, data handling, and also were equipped to use different excel formula for the calculations.
