History

Department of Bengali was established in 1970. Bengali was taught as a General Course in 1970. Undergraduate Honours Course was introduced from the next academic session in 1971.

Department of Bengali, Durgapur Government College is one of the best centers of learning of the local language in the entire district of Bardhaman. The Department ensures a friendly cohesion between teachers and students. Students always feel free to communicate with the teachers in the department regarding various aspects of their studies. Every year, students of the department actively participate in the college annual exhibition and have also won prizes in interdepartmental exhibitions and poster competitions. Students of this department have been placed in reputed universities of West Bengal.

Courses

The department offers following two undergraduate programmes in Bengali under the affiliation of Kazi Nazrul University, Asansol

• B.A. Honours in Bengali

• B.A. Program in Bengali

The curriculum and syllabus of these programmes is under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) implemented by the affiliating university.

The department offers generic elective course in Bengali for the students of Arts Honours programmes.

The department offers Modern Indian Languages (MIL) course for all students studying in Arts Stream.

Infrastructure
  • Department of Bengali has a seminar Library of 100 books of different aspects of Bengali Literature. The department is equipped with computer facilities.

Teaching
  • Department of Bengali has an efficient teaching and learning mechanism which is evident from the success profile of students and student progression to higher studies. Teachers of the department use both chalk and talk method and computer aided methods to teach in classrooms. Teachers also provide references and sometimes E-books to students for further study.

Assessment
  • To evaluate the student’ academic development continuously with their learning, teachers of our department take class tests after completing a portion of the syllabus. This particularly help to assess the students’ weakness so that more emphasis can be given by the teachers to help the students improve. To encourage participatory learning, group discussions are held in regular basis.
