Establishment:
Department of Botany started its journey in 1997 to offer General Course in Botany, with subsequent introduction of the Honours Course in 2003 under the Headship of Dr. Nirmalendu Das. Some of the distinguished faculties, who contributed to this department in past include: Professor Satyendra Nath Bhaumik, Dr. Khondakar Zahidur Islam, Dr. Jyotsna Dhara, Debasis Pal, Kasturi Ghatak, Sibani Samanta (Mitra), Dr. Saswati Laha, Professor Benudhar Mondal, Dr. Bharati Mukhopadhyay, and Dr. Moumita Basu.

The Department has also started offering Add on Courses for students of all Departments since the academic session 2023-2024.
Teaching and Research
Innovative teaching and evaluation strategies and effective mentor-mentee mechanism has resulted in brilliant graduates absorbed in reputed institutes for higher studies. The Department has shouldered its responsibility to nurture students for pursuing life science as a career and also identified and sensitized students towards the location specific research areas of the Durgapur industrial town, Raniganj coal mines, and Birbhum district such as impact of mining on tree diversity, assessment of vegetation under air pollution stress, microbial and phyto-diversity in coal mines, water quality in pit-lakes, wasteland ecorestoration etc. The research activities of the Department also requires special mention with major research projects sponsored by UGC and Department of Science and Technology (DST). Several international and national research publications have marked the academic excellence of the Department.
DBT STAR COLLEGE SCHEME
The Department is one of the participating departments under the DBT STAR COLLEGE SCHEME of the institution and has been organizing new experiments, workshops, hands on training programmes, seminars, invited lectures and interactive sessions, laboratory staff training programmes and several other initiatives since September 2022 focussed on the skill enhancement of students, faculty members and staff. Several equipment have been procured to strengthen the undergraduate teaching process under the scheme.
