NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME UNIT I AND II, DURGAPUR GOVERNMENT COLLEGE

The NSS wing of Durgapur Government College is very active since its inception and has a very glorious past. NSS has two units with volunteer base of hundred students in each unit belonging to science, Arts and commerce streams. Unit 1 was opened in 1972 and Unit 2 was opened in the year 2008. Financial assistance is disbursed from the affiliating University to these two units. Uttarpally is the adopted village under unit 1 and Dangapara is the adopted village of Unit 2. NSS unit activities include awareness campaigns, Green picnic Mission, Cleanliness Campaign, workshops and hands on training programme, organizing talks and motivational sessions, blood donation camps, community work, helping local community as and when required, surveys in adopted villages, and other related activities. The NSS activities were considered as one of the best practices during the NAAC Cycle-II visit of the instituion.

June 04-06, 2024: NSS Volunteers took Nature Pledge as an initiative of Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and celebrated World Environment Day with poster competition

May 31, 2024: Online Seminar on “Ill Effects of Consuming Tobacco and its accompanying health hazards” organized by NSS Units I and II, IQAC Durgapur Government College in collaboration with Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of West Bengal

July 15, 2023: NSS Unit I and Unit II carries a tree plantation program to celebrate Aranya Soptaho on 15th July 2023. The saplings were provided to us from Department of Forest, Durgapur Forest Division. A total of 50 saplings were planted which included Cashew, Mango, Polash, Jamun and other large trees. Students and teachers together made the initiative to plant the trees in and around the periphery of the college playground. Over 75 volunteers actively participated in the said program.

 

 

June 05, 2023: On 5th June, NSS volunteers celebrated the World Environment Day 2023 through plantation and beautification of the NSS garden and college campus. About 50 samplings were planted. The program was inaugurated by the Principal Dr. Debnath Palit by planting a sapling in a planting pot. Thereafter, volunteers planted various flowering as well as non-flowering decorative plants in their NSS garden as well as in the college campus. A total of 70 volunteers participated in the program.

 

 

April 03-09, 2023, NSS Special Camp: The special camp started on 3rd April, 2023. The camp started with hoisting of NSS flag maintaining the camp protocol of NSS directive of Central Government. It was followed by an inaugural program where we had Dr. Sachidananda Roy, NSS programme officer, Bankura Christian College as the guest of honour, he gave an inspiring and appreciating lecture on the different activities of NSS followed by welcome address of Dr. Debnath Palit, Principal, Durgapur Government College. The volunteers had a daily routine to be followed everyday starting with hoisting of their flag, followed by physical exercise or yoga. Breakfast, lunch and tiffin was made by the volunteers on roster basis along with kitchen and cleaning duties. These are the aspects of NSS special camp which teaches the students to be self sufficient and also learn different co-operative activities. On 4th April, a special sanitation and hygiene program to sensitize the women about using sanitary pads was conducted in Jharna Pally. Free napkins were also distributed and chocolates to all children in Kaligunj, followed by awareness activity and survey at the adopted village. Volunteers were divided into teams. During the afternoon session, a pidilite workshop was arranged on handicraft making. Day 3 had long activities at the adopted villages which included interaction with children and women of the village followed by pidilite workshop in afternoon. On day 4, similar schedule was followed in morning and in afternoon we had a special lecture delivered by Smt. Swatikana Mondal, Program Officer, MMMC College, Durgapur. Day 5 had normal activities like drawing and teaching with village children, followed by Handicraft and jewellery making. We had Puspita Chakraborty, an ex-student having her own online jewellery page who inspired several other students for the same. The day ended with an awareness lecture by Prof. T.K. Saha, Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, NIT, Durgapur who provided a mesmerising talk on climate change. Day 8 had village activities and a drawing competition for the village children were organized. This special camp ended on 9th April, 2023 with a closing ceremony, certificate distribution to ex volunteers and camp fire.

 

 

December 1, 2022: AIDS awareness programme in local community to observe World AIDS awareness Day. 59 NSS volunteers divided in five small groups to aware the college students, villagers and Auto drivers regarding the AIDS, prohibition and prevention of HIV/AIDS by giving red ribbon. They used the slogan – “keep the AIDS away and sympathise with diseased anyway”.

Students of every Department of Durgapur Government College enthusiastically joined the respective webinar via the Google Meet link and You tube link and asked questions in the interactive session

December 25, 2019, December 31, 2019 and January 01, 2020: Green Picnic Mission by NSS Units. This initiative is taken to aware the picnic goers about the ill-effects of picnic waste, especially plastic and thermocol plates and glasses and also the noise pollution created from the sound box that are used during picnics.

 


December 7, 2019, Swachcha Bharat Pakhwara; Cleaning Campaign in local community

 

November 25, 2019: Free Health Check up Camp organized by NSS Units. On behalf of Sub- divisional hospital Dr. Indrajit Majhi, Smt Anamika Mondal, Pharmacist and Smt Pritha Ruidas and Staff Nurse were present for the health check up. 70 students from Durgapur Government College participated in the event. Blood sugar, blood pressure, blood group, height and weight of students, teachers and non-teaching staff was assessed. About 133 students got their free health check up done along with 7 teachers and 11 non-teaching staff.
